ON WHERE WE ARE TODAY

We need to change the way we approach interfaces by going back to our design roots and focusing on what’s most natural and the problems people have rather than gimmicks.

ON WHAT IS AN INTERFACE IF NOT A SCREEN

APIs create an immense opportunity for things to learn about you. We are in the infancy of lots of technology at the moment which will only get cleverer through that.

A lot of things we assume in the future will be led by heavily involved interfaces and will just happen for us. That’s really the pinnacle of a natural or invisible interface in that we don’t really know its there, we just take it for granted that these things happen.

Our bedroom knows we are awake and opens the curtains, it plays our favourite song, it knows if we are happy or sad and if we want a tea or a coffee. It sounds crazy but it’s really not far off.

ON THE POWER OF MACHINE LEARNING

Machine learning ... means people will come to epiphanies about interface and epiphanies about the way people want to interface with technology that you just wouldn’t get through a traditional design methodology.

ON THE FUTURE FOR DESIGN

Firms across the board are .. realising design isn’t just about making pretty things or usable things it’s an entire process that envelops problem solving at large … designers are becoming the people who define the ways things are done … whole organisations are now being led by design process.
